Dentists polish entrepreneurial skills

Dr. Parviz Yazdani and his colleagues are always trying to put a smile on their patients' faces.

Yazdani, along with Dr. Lily Sammak, Dr. James Dessouki and Dr. Ali Hooshangui, have opened two dental clinics in the city, downtown on Pacific Avenue and on Confederation Drive.

The spots had been occupied by a dentist who retired.

"We had to gut and renovate the place," Yazdani said.

Yazdani, who graduated from the University of Saskatchewan in 1998, has had a practice in North Battleford for the past 10 years.

He thought if he opened a clinic in Saskatoon he could entice young dentists to join and also spend time at the clinic in North Battleford.

The Saskatoon clinics do everything from basic dental care to high-end cosmetic work.

He said the clinics can do a digital simulation where patients can visualize what their teeth will look like after the procedure, he said.

They have also installed a digital panoramic X-ray machine that takes an entire picture of the jaw, including sinus, jaw joints and, of course, teeth.

"You see everything in one shot," said Yazdani, adding it is considered basic treatment on most dental plans.

And their website is a wealth of information for patients.

Frequently asked questions, price lists and other information are on the site.

Having a well-informed patient helps the dentist, Yazdani said.

"If you can't know what's going on in your mouth, how are you going to take care of it," he said.

There are six dentists at the two clinics and all of the partners also teach part-time at the U of S dental college.

The dental office on Pacific Avenue is open from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. The office on Confederation Drive is open from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. for the summer and from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. beginning in September. There is also emergency services available.
